Mabuhay!! It's Filipino-American History Month | EP19
In this episode, Anita and Aileen bring their attention to the celebration of Filipino American History Month in October. They express their surprise when they discover the first known records of Filipino in Americans as early as 1587 in Morro Bay, California and a settlement in Louisiana in 1763.
Despite being one of the earliest settlers in the Bay Area and continental United States, most Americans did not know about their presence or recognize the Filipino ethnic identity. Until recently, growing up Filipino in America was often greeted by blank stares and confusion about where they fit into known “other” ethnicities.
Learn about the multicultural heritage that is the root of the vibrant Filipino culture and language. Early Malaysian cultural exchange, Spanish colonization and Chinese immigration has had enormous influences on the indigenous people and have shaped the Filipino identity, cuisine and language.
As Aileen shares her experience of growing up Filipino American, we learn how her community preserved their culture living in America and how they continue to pass their cultural heritage down to future generations.
Join the GenerAsianX Podcast with hosts Anita and Aileen as they discuss the celebration of Filipinos in American from their GenX and Asian American perspective.
